Work Health and Safety (WHS)

Port of Yamba is committed to the safety of all those who visit or work at the facilities we manage; including our staff, contractors, the community and any other visitors to the port.

As part of our commitment to employee and stakeholder safety, we undertake site specific, employee and contractor inductions. These inductions promote the safety requirements of the port and the inductees, while also providing an overview of the risk and hazards associated with particular tasks or sites.

The port has a detailed WHS program of activities aimed at ensuring compliance with WHS legislation. The focus of the program is to facilitate a positive safety culture and achieve our corporate safety goal for a safe work place.

Induction requirements

All persons accessing port facilities to undertake any form of work are required to undertake a site induction and site tour. The requirement is applicable to:

Employees of service providers:

  • Agents
  • Stevedores
  • Linesmen
  • Lines boatmen
  • Fumigators or
  • Waste handling contractors

Government employees:

  • Inspection and enforcement officers or
  • Support contractors

Contractors

  • Performing work on site or
  • Accessing the site to work on vessels

Persons accessing the site for the purpose of a visit only may not be required to undertaken a site Induction unless required to do so by the Port. In these cases the visitor must be escorted at all times.

Any person that the Harbour Master deems is to complete an induction.

Induction type

The induction requirement is also dependent on site to be accessed and activity undertaken. There are three inductions for Port sites:

  • Goodwood Island Wharf
  • Yamba Pilot Station and
  • General Contractor Induction (Required to be completed prior to commencement of works).

To undertake an induction please contact the Wharf Stevedore, Ship's Agent or WHS Team.

Security Access

Download the Port of Yamba port security advice which explains the water-side restricted zones established in the port.

Persons requiring access to port facilities will require a form of identification recognized by the port.

Visitors

MSIC – persons holding an MSIC but no port recognised identification will be considered as visitors.

Non MSIC – persons with a legitimate business reason to access port facilities but do not hold an MSIC or Port Authority recognised identification will be considered visitors. Such visitors will require escort at all times. Special arrangements for access and escort will need to be made by the applicant prior to arrival.

CCTV – Port of Yamba owns and operates Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in accordance with an established Code of Practice and is subject to state and federal law. The CCTV will be operated fairly within the applicable law and only for the purposes for which it is established or which are subsequently agreed in accordance with the Code of Practice.
