Port Authority team wins big at Australian maritime awards

Port Authority team members recognised for their valuable contributions to the maritime sector at the 2018 Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards

Two Port Authority team members celebrated big wins at the 2018 Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards (22 November) in Sydney.

Newcastle Harbour Master Jeanine Drummond took home the Women in Shipping and Maritime Logistics Award, while Sydney marine pilot Michael Kelly walked away with the Maritime Services Award for his commitment to the industry and work helping young seafarers get their start in the maritime industry.

Around 450 guests from the Australian maritime sector were at the event to celebrate the best ports, organisations, services and individuals in the industry.

Jeanine, who was appointed as Newcastle and Yamba Harbour Master in August this year, was recognised for her achievements and dedication to supporting women in the maritime industry.

Vice-chair of the International Association of Ports and Harbours Women’s Forum; and a member of the Women in Shipping and Transport Association, Jeanine worked with the Nautical Institute late last year to stage the first-ever Connecting Women in Maritime networking event to give a voice to women making their careers in the maritime industry.

The Maritime Services Award was handed to Sydney marine pilot Michael Kelly for his work in finding new ways to build the Australian maritime skill base and create more career opportunities in the industry

One of Michael’s initiative is Port Authority’s newly launched cadetship program which aims to help young people make their way in the maritime industry by partnering with shipping companies to offer aspiring seafarers valuable sea-time experience.

Congratulations to Jeanine and Michael for their awards and their valuable work in the industry.

The Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards is an annual event run by the leading maritime magazine, the DCN (Daily Cargo News).

This year Port Authority sponsored the Gender Diversity Award, won by Port of Townsville.
