Port Botany back as nation’s biggest container port
Port Botany overtakes Melbourne to become Australia’s largest container port by volume once again
A new report has found that the Port Botany in Sydney once again holds the title of Australia’s largest container port since it lost it to Melbourne in 2015/16.
The report by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) finds that Port Botany processed a record 2.5m TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) in the past year, compared to 2.4m for Melbourne.
Following the leads of Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane was reported as processing 1.2m TEU, Freemantle with 0.7m and Adelaide with 0.4m.
The ACCC’s Container Stevedoring Monitoring Report 2016-17 monitors the prices, costs and profits of container terminal operator companies at the ports of Adelaide, Brisbane, Burnie, Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney.
