Future of cruise in NSW
What is the Cruise Development Plan?

The NSW Government’s Cruise Development Plan was developed in xx on a recommendation from the Visitor Economy Industry Action Plan (VEIAP), to keep the state number one in the country for overnight visitors and accelerate growth to deliver maximum economic benefits through our visitor economy.

The plan builds on the NSW Government’s significant investments in the state’s cruise industry. The CDP details ten actions to support the industry both in Sydney and in regional NSW, with options to address short, medium and long-term capacity constraints.

This will ensure that NSW remains a world-class cruise destination and continues to capitalise on economic benefits this industry brings to our state.

What role does Port Authority NSW play in expanding cruise?

As the primary cruise terminal operator in NSW and the on-water authority managing vessel traffic within ports, Port Authority of NSW helps the NSW Government assess the feasibility of expanding cruise capacity in the State.

Any assessments made by Port Authority NSW are within our areas of operational expertise and consider maritime, community, environmental and economic impacts.

Are there plans to expand regional cruise in NSW?

Investments, consultations and assessments continue to be considered to address cruise opportunities across NSW. Port Authority of NSW is exploring cruise visitation opportunities across the minor ports of Trial Bay, Batemans Bay, Yamba, Coffs Harbour and Kiama as well as increasing cruise visitation within the major regional ports of Eden, Newcastle and Port Kembla.

As of March 2022, a proposal to modify the existing State Significant Infrastructure at Eden Cruise Wharf was submitted. This proposed modification will enable larger cruise ships to call into Eden Cruise Wharf, increasing tourism capacity and accessibility to the Sapphire Coast region. See more information here.

As of April 2022, there are currently no plans for cruise expansion to other regional ports or areas.

Will there be cruise in Jervis Bay?

Jervis Bay is not being considered as a cruise destination at this time, and there are no current plans, proposals or strategies to expand regional cruise in the area.

Will there be cruise in Yarra Bay / Molineaux Point?

In May 2023, The NSW Government has announced that the proposed site for a third cruise terminal at Yarra Bay or Molineux Point will no longer be pursued.
