Port of Eden

Revitalising Eden Harbour Program

The Revitalising Eden Harbour Program will coordinate the delivery of three major projects for the Port of Eden: the Eden Welcome Centre, the Safe Harbour Project and the Eden Harbourside Activation Project.

The NSW Government is committed to improving port infrastructure and supporting the economic development of Eden as a maritime tourism hub along the Sapphire Coast.

Port Authority of New South Wales will lead the coordination of the Revitalising Eden Harbour Program (program) with the support of our partner Transport for NSW (Safe Harbour Project) and the Department of Planning Industry and Environment (Eden Harbourside Activation Project).

By coordinating these projects, the program will ensure they develop in a whole-of-port approach, supporting jobs and economic development through the expansion of port infrastructure, working port activity, tourism, improved customer experiences and private-sector investment.

The key projects that make up the program are:

The Eden Welcome Centre (Port Authority of NSW)

As Eden becomes an increasingly popular cruise destination, the Eden Welcome Centre will be a purpose-built facility to provide for the forecasted 100,000 cruise passengers each year, stallholders, port administration and other port operations. The Eden Welcome Centre will be located on the existing co-op site adjacent to Eden Ice Supplies within close proximity of the recently completed cruise wharf.

The Welcome Centre will be designed by award-winning architectural firm, Cox, designers of the Bermagui Fishermen’s Wharf. The centre will have:

  • two floors with an approximate size of 1000 square metres
  • a ground floor with capacity for visitors, an area for market stallholders and restroom amenities
  • a first floor with office space for multi-agency staff with maritime responsibilities and other commercial uses.

The Safe Harbour Project (Maritime Branch of Transport for NSW)

On occasion, Snug Cove is exposed to extreme wind and wave conditions which can impact on safety and access by visiting vessels. The Safe Harbour Project aims to provide a safer, more reliable, and accessible harbour for all maritime users and improve the protection of existing maritime infrastructure in Snug Cove.

TfNSW has opened the tender process for suitably qualified and experienced specialists for the supply and installation of a 366 metre, fixed panel wave attenuator which comprises tubular steel piles and supporting precast concrete panels. The tender can be found at https://www.tenders.nsw.gov.au/

A pre-tender meeting and site inspection was held on 9 November at the Eden Fishermen’s Recreation Club to provide tenderers with information and an opportunity to ask questions. The meeting was well attended by companies expressing interest in the project.

Over the past month consultation occurred with marine-based stakeholders about the planned access and public exclusion areas that will be in place during construction of the attenuator, pending contract award.

The Harbourside Activation Project (Department of Planning Industry and Environment)

Crown Lands has taken possession of the site and secured vacant possession to address the immediate tenant and public safety concerns identified in the condition assessment report of the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre.

DPIE’s short-term focus remains on taking the necessary steps to make the site safe which will involve the demolition of the building. Further information can be found at:

www.industry.nsw.gov.au/lands/news/statement-on-sapphire-coast-marine-discovery-centre-building; and www.industry.nsw.gov.au/lands/public/notifications/sapphire-coast-marine-discovery-centre

DPIE to continue to engage with the tenants to support their efforts to relocate from the site.

Crown Lands has granted a licence to the Eden Visitor Information Centre to permit vendors including food vans and mobile caterers to operate from Snug Cove through to the end of April 2021. Vendors will commence operations at the site in the near future.

Hoarding is currently being erected around the building to enhance security and safety.

No decision has been made on the longer-term use of the site. Updates will be provided to the Eden community as they become available.

Further information on each of the Projects activities and projected timeframes will be available to the community in the coming months.
