Port Authority has released its 2024/25 Annual Report and inaugural Sustainability Report, outlining a year of strong operational performance and progress towards long-term efficiency and environmental goals.
As the State-owned corporation responsible for keeping NSW’s commercial ports operating safely and efficiently, Port Authority plays a central role in the State’s supply chain, with about 99 per cent of NSW trade moving by sea.
Port Authority of NSW CEO John McKenna said he was proud to deliver both reports at the conclusion of the organisation’s previous five-year Strategic Plan, which has created strong momentum for its next strategic direction for 2025–2030.
“Our people have worked with real commitment this year to keep NSW trade and tourism moving safely and reliably so NSW’s economy and communities continue to thrive,” Mr McKenna said.
“Our strong partnerships with industry and government continue to ensure our ports remain open for business connecting NSW to the world.”
Key FY25 highlights included:
- 10,198 pilotage movements
- 5,500 commercial vessel visits
- 309 cruise ship visits carrying passengers and crew
- 1,764 safe vessel movements carrying almost 21 million tonnes of dangerous goods
- 186 hydrographic surveys
- Dealing with 872 marine incidents and responding to 314 emergencies
- Delivered $36.3 million in net profit, contributing to dividends paid to NSW Government to support the funding of critical services
The inaugural Sustainability Report outlines significant environmental and sustainability progress across the business, including:
- Reaching zero Scope 2 emissions through renewable energy, a major milestone towards net zero
- A 52 per cent gross reduction in emissions from baseline
- Commencement of shore power construction at White Bay Cruise Terminal
- Release of the first sustainable infrastructure guideline
- Funding of ten community grants across NSW port communities
- Establishing two traineeship programs for women to support gender diversity in the maritime sector
- Increased rooftop solar, enhanced air-quality monitoring and progress on a multi-party seagrass restoration partnership
“These achievements provide a clear view of our progress and priorities as we continue to reduce emissions, continue to focus on our responsibilities as a neighbour, and support healthier and more diverse port environments,” Mr McKenna said.
“As we build on this momentum into 2026, our focus remains on delivering safe, sustainable and future-ready port and cruise operations that support NSW trade and tourism for the decades ahead.
“I encourage our port communities, customers and stakeholders to read this year’s Annual Report and Sustainability Report, which set out our performance openly and offer a deeper understanding of the essential work we do to support NSW.”
