Por Botany multi-agency training exercise

Port Authority’s Incident Response Team was put to the test yesterday, as staff undertook a multi-agency simulated emergency exercise to respond to an on-water flammable product spill at the Ampol Terminal in Kurnell.

Working alongside Ampol, Fire and Rescue NSW, Environmental Protection Agency and other emergency responders, the scenario-based exercise allowed Port Authority to test response strategies, improve the coordination of a multi-agency approach, and ensure rapid and effective action in the event of a real-life incident.

Harbour Master of Port Botany and Sydney Harbour Captain Myron Fernandes said these regular exercises allowed staff to practice and refine the skills and processes needed to effectively respond to real-time emergencies.

“Yesterday’s emergency exercise put Port Authority and AMPOL’s teams to the test during a realistic scenario, requiring them to respond quickly and efficiently to isolate and contain the incident, practice an emergency evacuation for the surrounding area, and develop and execute an incident action plan," he said.

“Exercises like these ensure our teams stand ready to safely and efficiently respond to incidents to protect surrounding port communities, the marine environment and port infrastructure.”

Ampol’s Executive General Manager, Infrastructure, Michele Bardy, said:

“Emergency response simulations are an important component of our ongoing risk management program, ensuring we are always prepared to respond effectively to real-life incidents.

“Ampol has been part of the Kurnell community for almost 70 years. Yesterday's exercise demonstrates the importance of effective coordination and collaboration across multiple agencies, to ensure together we continue to safeguard the local community.”

Emergency training exercises are conducted regularly at each of Port Authority six commercial ports to ensure staff are well-trained in the event of emergencies.
