$50,000 investment making waves for port communities across NSW

Community-led projects across NSW’s port precincts will receive a significant boost, with Port Authority investing $50,000 through the latest round of its Community Grants program - bringing total funding to $100,000 in just two years.

A total of 11 organisations have been selected in the 2026 round, delivering initiatives that strengthen community connection, environmental protection, cultural celebration, safety and skills development.

Port Authority Chief Executive Officer John McKenna said the program demonstrates Port Authority’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the communities in which it operates.

“We’re proud to support the people and grassroots organisations who are making a real difference in their local communities,” Mr McKenna said.
“The strength of applications this year reflects the passion, innovation and commitment within our port communities, and we congratulate all successful recipients.

“These grants are one of the many ways we invest in the communities where we operate - supporting initiatives that create lasting social, environmental and economic value close to our ports.”

The Port Authority Community Grants program is focused on backing locally led projects that reflect the unique character of each port, helping build stronger, more connected and resilient communities across NSW.

Now in its second year, the program continues to support initiatives that strengthen the communities connected to the State’s major ports.

Successful recipients of the 2026 Community Grants Program in each region include:  

Sydney and Port Botany:

• Kogarah Community Services to roll out a local water safety program across Botany Bay, promoting safer and more responsible use of waterways;
• Making Waves Foundation to expand its boat-building and mentoring program, creating pathways for young people into maritime skills and employment.

Port Kembla and Eden:

• Goats Creek Longboarders to deliver a community surf and wellbeing program, bringing locals together through inclusive coastal activities;
• FareShare Australia to deliver its From Port to Plate initiative, providing 1,100 meals to people experiencing food insecurity while reducing food waste.
• The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) will enhance marine mammal rescue and response capabilities along the South Coast.
• Eden Whale Festival will deliver its flagship annual event celebrating the region’s connection to whales and the ocean.

Newcastle:

• Hunter Science and Innovation Hub to deliver its Bushcraft Boat Building STEM program engaging young people and families;
• Awabakal Ltd to deliver the Newcastle NAIDOC Family Festival, celebrating Aboriginal culture and bringing the community together near the harbour.

Applications for the next Community Grants Program will open in early 2027.
