What lies beneath Port Botany?

Port Authority survey team called in to help clean up Port Botany and find a significant haul of underwater hazards.

It might all look calm on the surface but under the waves, all kinds of hazards can pose a serious safety threat to ships.

That’s why the Port Authority survey team were called in Port Botany recently to find out what hazards were lurking beneath the water at Brotherson Dock.

The team used vessels fitted with state-of-the-art echo sounder equipment to make a hydrographic survey of the seafloor. The team then identified and marked any significant objects with buoys and helped direct a dive team that went down to remove the hazards.

And this haul was significant. The clean-up retrieved 72 fenders; a 1.6 tonne, 4m-long steel tube; a twist lock bin; a wheelie bin; a baby seat; as well as a significant number of other objects such as timber and numerous tyres.

Port Authority’s Survey Services team regularly scan the seabed to search for hazards and monitors changes to berth and channel depths so that the waters of New South Wales remain safe for shipping.
