Sea Sunday – recognising seafarers

Sunday 9 July is the international celebration of Sea Sunday, a day of acknowledgement and thanks to the enduring work of seafarers.

This international day of recognition has been celebrated for over 160 years, led by the Mission to Seafarers and the Sailors’ Society.

Port Authority is proud to be involved in a movement to support seafarers and the work of the Mission to Seafarers across 200 ports and around 50 countries.

In Newcastle, the newly formed Port Welfare Committee supports the Mission to Seafarers and aims to address wider issues that may affect seafarers and their families visiting or residing around the port.

Newcastle is Australia’s third largest port with around 2500 ships visit the port each year.

The formation of the Port Welfare Committee builds on the long history Newcastle has in supporting Seafarers Welfare, and is consistent with international practice and demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the port community.

Members of the Port of Newcastle Port Welfare Committee include Port Authority of NSW, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Port Waratah Coal Services, Port of Newcastle, Hunterlink, Mission to Seafarers, Maritime Union of Australia, International Transport Worker's Federation (ITF) and local Ship Agents.
