Port of Eden transformation begins

Work begins on huge project that will bring the biggest cruise ships to the Sapphire Coast town.

A new era of cruise tourism is planned the Sapphire Coast region as a major project to create a 110-metre extension to Eden’s Snug Cove wharf gets underway.

The Eden Breakwater Wharf Extension Project is $44 million by the NSW Department of Industry to transform Eden into a major cruise destination. The significant project will allow the biggest cruise ships – over 300 metres in length – to berth in Snug Cove instead of having to anchor in the harbour and ferry passengers to and from shore by tender.

The first major work began in September when a dredging ship arrived in Eden from Melbourne. The vessel began a 24/7 eight-week-long operation to clear a massive 231,500 cubic meters of sand and rock from Eden’s Snug Cove.

The dredging will create a clear depth of 10.5 metres in the cove — the minimum needed for the largest cruise ships to sail safely.

Eden is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for cruise ships. Seventeen cruise ships are due to visit the port town over the 2017/2018 cruise season — up from 14 visits during 2016/17 and 8 over 2015/16.
