Sydney seeks new harbour master

Port Authority of New South Wales is on the lookout for a master mariner to fill one of the most coveted maritime roles in Australia: Sydney harbour master.

Leading Port Authority’s marine operations in Sydney, the role of the harbour master ensures the safe and efficient navigation of all commercial vessels within Sydney Harbour and Port Botany.

World-famous Sydney Harbour is one of the busiest waterways in Australia. Over 300 cruise ships visit the harbour each year, sharing the waters with hundreds of trade vessels visiting the working ports of Glebe Island and Gore Cove, and thousands of recreational boaters and ferries.

South of Sydney Harbour, Port Botany is one of the most important container ports in Australia and serves the largest population centre in the country. Over 1500 large commercial vessels visit the port each year.

Across both ports, the harbour master is responsible for setting safety regulations and directions to shipping, ensuring the safe provision of marine pilotage services and directing resources and personnel in response to maritime emergencies within the port.

The Sydney harbour master role was previously held by Captain Philip Holliday before his recent appointment as CEO of Port Authority of NSW.

“This is one of the most prestigious civilian maritime positions in Australia, if not the world,’” says Captain Holliday. “Sydney Harbour and Port Botany are two of Australia’s key gateways to the world, contributing billions to our economy and vital on a local, regional and national level.”

“After eight years as Sydney harbour master myself, I can attest to the challenging nature of this role but also the unparalleled satisfaction of working with some of the best marine operations professionals in Australia.

“We’re looking for a talented maritime professional at the top of their game to join Port Authority and help our teams in their mission to keep Sydney’s ports safe, secure and open to the world.”

Applicants for the harbour master position must possess a formal Master Class 1 qualification, or equivalent, with expert ship handling knowledge, extensive command time or broad marine pilotage experience. The right candidate will have management experience in a port, marine or terminal-related business supported by a knowledge of all aspects of port safety and commercial management.

To apply for this opportunity or for a full position description, candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to [email protected].

Applications will close on Sunday 2 February 2020 at 12pm.
