Nobbys Headland reimagined

Port Authority of New South Wales wants to hear the community’s ideas for the future use of the iconic Nobbys Headland.

Nobbys Headland is one of Newcastle’s best vantage points, with 360-degree views of the city, working harbour and Newcastle’s stunning coastline. It is home to an active lighthouse that’s been in operation for over 150 years and continues to safely direct ships in and out of Newcastle harbour.

Now, Port Authority of New South Wales is consulting with leaders in the Newcastle community, interest groups, business associations and the broader community for input into the possible future uses at Nobbys Headland.

Nobbys is one of Newcastle’s most recognisable landmarks, but its ongoing use is not without challenges – the site has steep and restricted access, services are limited and the planning and heritage requirements are comprehensive. The site includes the three cottages, ancillary buildings and grounds. It excludes the signal station and lighthouse buildings and their footprints. It also excludes Macquarie Pier.

We are looking for great ideas that meet the unique site constraints.

Potential uses that may be considered with approval include a café, restaurant, kiosk, eco-tourism facility, port and maritime interpretative centre or museum, as well as a local history, cultural or community facility.

The data gathered through the consultation process will inform an expression of interest (EOI) for its long-term use.
