Nobbys Headland: public access continues

Public access to Newcastle’s iconic Nobbys Headland will remain in place following a recent call for expressions of interest for the future use of the site.

In October, Port Authority consulted with the Newcastle community to hear suggestions on the long-term use of the heritage site and its buildings.

The information gathered was used to inform an expression of interest process but a month-long search was unable to find a suitable medium- or long-term tenant.

Hearing community feedback about the importance of continued access to the landmark, Port Authority will now keep Nobbys Headland open to visitors on weekends, public holidays and cruise ship days.

“The community told us that ongoing access to the site was a priority,” said Emma Fensom, Chief Operating Officer, Newcastle and Yamba, Port Authority of New South Wales.

“Although the recent expressions of interest process did not identify a suitable tenant for the site at this point, we are really pleased to be able to confirm that current access arrangements will continue for the foreseeable future.

“With the current EOI process now complete, this is by no means the end of the discussion. We received fantastic feedback and insight during the engagement phase of the project, and we will use this to undertake further strategic planning for Nobbys Headland.

“There is a lot for us to consider in deciding what the next steps are and the timeline for this is yet to be determined.”

As well as being one of Newcastle’s most beloved locations, Nobbys Headland remains a key piece of operational infrastructure for the safe movement of ships through Newcastle Harbour, with an active signal station and a lighthouse that’s been in operation for over 150 years.
