Glebe Island: Multi-User Facility approved

A new import, storage and distribution facility has been approved for construction at the Glebe Island port in Sydney Harbour.

Port Authority of New South Wales’ planned Multi-User Facility will meet inner Sydney’s increasing demand for concrete and construction materials; supporting the city’s transformative infrastructure projects such as Sydney Metro, WestConnex and Western Harbour Tunnel over the next decade.

A working port for over a hundred years, Glebe Island and White Bay provide the only deep‑water wharves for commercial dry bulk materials shipping in Sydney Harbour. The port’s berths provide a low-cost, low-impact and sustainable way to bring dry bulk construction materials necessary for concrete production into the city.

Importing materials by ship will substantially reduce truck movements on roads in the Sydney region – a single vessel can replace between 1,100-1,500 truckloads of material.

The facility will have separated storage bays to receive, store and then distribute dry bulk construction materials to concrete batching plants and construction sites

Dry bulk construction materials will be offloaded from ships via their unloading equipment and into the facility, where the materials can then be loaded from the storage bays onto trucks within the building.

The project announcement follows Port Authority’s release of a comprehensive Response to Submissions (RtS) Report that responds to public submissions concerning the project and issues raised public consultation.

Port Authority will continue to engage with community members and other stakeholders to manage and mitigate any potential concerns. This will involve implementing mitigation measures for noise, traffic and air quality, as well as holding information sessions and seeking input to the visual amenity of the building.
