Port Authority of New South Wales manages Macquarie Pier on behalf of the New South Wales State Government. Macquarie Pier is available for both public and private functions, activities (including filming hire) and events.

Each function, activity, or event at Macquarie Pier requires prior written approval from Port Authority. Applicants must submit their applications at least three months before the proposed event date. Port Authority requires a minimum of 30 days’ notice to process an application to use Macquarie Pier. It will assess each application and may approve, conditionally approve, or refuse it.

If a function, activity, or event at Macquarie Pier is free to the public or supports a charitable cause, and the applicant follows the process below, Port Authority will allow its use free of charge, except for the administration fee outlined below. If the proposed use involves a private or commercial function, activity, or event, Port Authority may charge a hiring fee based on the type of use, in addition to the administration fee.

Process for applying to use Macquarie Pier for functions, activities or events

Organisations or individuals seeking to use Macquarie Pier for a function, activity, or event must follow this process:

  1. The applicant must complete part one of the application form on this webpage and submit it to Port Authority at least three calendar months before the proposed event date. Port Authority will not consider applications submitted less than 30 days before the proposed event date.
  2. If Port Authority determines that the completed part one of the application form is eligible for further consideration, the applicant must complete and submit part two of the application form, including all required documentation listed on the form.
  3. If Port Authority approves part two of the application, it will:
    1. Charge the approved applicant an administration fee of $150.00 to process the application and prepare the required licence for execution. Depending on the nature of the hire, Port Authority may retain, waive, or donate the administration fee back to a charitable organisation.
    2. Assess whether a Hiring Fee applies based on the proposed use and notify the applicant of the amount. If the applicant chooses not to proceed due to the Hiring Fee, Port Authority will refund the administration fee
  4. The approved applicant cannot use Macquarie Pier for the function, activity, or event until Port Authority receives an executed copy of the licence and, if applicable, full payment of the Hiring Fee.
  5. While using Macquarie Pier, the approved applicant must comply with the conditions of the executed licence and adhere to all security, operational, and other requirements set by Port Authority.

Note: Port Authority’s properties and precincts are primarily used for port operations. If a previously approved function, activity, or event needs to be cancelled because the space is required for port operations, Port Authority will refund the full cost of any administration fee and/or hiring fee.
