In a year marked by global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties, Port Authority has achieved several notable milestones—from returning a record $38 million to the state, to facilitating a sharp resurgence in cruise tourism, and reaching Net Zero on Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. This remarkable performance underscores our vital role in keeping New South Wales’ ports safe, efficient, and sustainable for the future.

Cruising to a comeback

The cruise industry’s resurgence was a highlight, with 366 ship visits across NSW ports—an increase of 18% from the previous year—nearly matching pre-COVID figures. Sydney’s port alone recorded 307 visits, while Eden and Newcastle welcomed over 60,000 and 30,000 passengers respectively. This upsurge contributed $4.41 billion to the State’s economy, demonstrating that NSW remains a favoured destination for global cruise lines.

Environmental leadership

Sustainability remained top of mind, with Port Authority reaching net zero for Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions—powered by 100% certified renewable electricity. This milestone sets the foundation for our 2040 Net Zero goal. Ongoing initiatives, including exploring alternative vessel fuels, removing 1,380kg of litter from Sydney Harbour, and diverting 170 tonnes of waste from landfill, underscore our strong focus on preserving the marine environment for future generations.
