A world-class cruising destination, Sydney Harbour welcomes hundreds of vessels and thousands of passengers each year to its shores. Whether you’re a dedicated cruiser or just enjoy the scenic sight of ships sailing through the harbour, here’s where to find the best cruise ship-spotting locations in Sydney.

Burragula lookout, Sydney Harbour National Park

For a panoramic view over the Sydney skyline and across to South Head, Burragula lookout has one of the city’s prime spots to watch cruise ships sail through the heads. Bring a pair of binoculars to spot Hornby Lighthouse across the bay.

Hornby Lighthouse, Watsons Bay

The iconic red and white stripes of Hornby Lighthouse have been welcoming keen walkers and guiding ships through the harbour for over 160 years. A short stroll from Camp Cove, the working lighthouse stands on South Head and offers an excellent spot for ship spotting.

Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point

Sitting between the opera house and Garden Island, watch cruise ships glide into Circular Quay, or catch the vessels sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and west  to White Bay Cruise Terminal.

Sydney Opera House Northern Broadwalk, Circular Quay

One of the best lookouts in the city, watch these floating cities glide into the harbour and hook a left into Circular Quay from the Northern Broadwalk at Sydney Opera House.

Cahill Walkway, Circular Quay

Set above Circular Quay railway station, the Cahill Walkway and adjoining motorway take in two of Sydney’s most renowned attractions, the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge – and offer a bird’s eye view of visiting vessels and The Rocks historic maritime village.

Rotunda Observation Deck, Overseas Passenger Terminal Sydney

The closest you’ll get to the action on a ship day, the Rotunda Observation Deck at OPT gives an epic vantage point to capture all the action as expert Marine Pilots and powerful tugboats carefully guide the ships into berth.

Barangaroo Reserve, Barangaroo

Barangaroo Reserve’s rolling green lawns offer a fantastic view to catch vessels as they wind their way past Me-Mel (Goat Island) and into White Bay Cruise Terminal.

Illoura Reserve, Balmain East

On the western side of the harbour, Illoura Reserve is surrounded by native bush. Peeking through the trees, you’ll see ships sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and past Barangaroo into Rozelle.

Pirrama Park, Pyrmont

Sitting opposite White Bay Cruise Terminal, watch cruise ships dock, then stroll along Stevedore Walk, a tribute to the maritime workers who shaped Sydney’s working harbour.

Anzac Bridge, Pyrmont or Rozelle

Walking across Anzac Bridge from Pyrmont or Rozelle offers sweeping views of Glebe Island, White Bay, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the historic Glebe Island Bridge.

Check the cruise schedule to plan your visit around key arrivals and departures. Happy spotting!
