A journey through Newcastle’s maritime heritage
Connecting Newcastle Harbour to the iconic Nobbys-Whibayganba Headland and lighthouse, the historic Macquarie Pier is a beloved attraction for Novocastrians and visitors to the region alike. Offering a fascinating blend of historical significance and operational function, Macquarie Pier is an access route for the Newcastle Breakwater and the active signal station and lighthouse atop the headland.
A convict causeway
Constructed in the early 19th century by convict labour, Macquarie Pier was designed as both a breakwater and connection to the mainland, linking to what was then known as Nobbys Island to create a safer passage for ships entering the harbour. This engineering feat played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s development as a thriving port, facilitating trade and contributing to economic growth of the Hunter region.
The Mac Pier makeover
In 2020, Port Authority began a revitalisation project to enhance Macquarie Pier and its historic harbourside walkway, ensuring it remains a favourite destination for years to come.
The project seamlessly integrated the pier with the popular Bathers Way coastal walk. Visitors can now enjoy a 900-metre reconstructed pathway with uninterrupted scenic views, relax at the paved area at the foot of Nobbys Head, and take in the views from the sandstone-block seating along the pathway.
Award-winning audio tour
In partnership with local historians and archivists, interpretive signage and a free and immersive Macquarie Pier historical audio-visual tour were introduced to bring Newcastle’s maritime history to life. The audio tour was highly commended by the 2023 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards.
Spanning the lifetime of this ancient place, the audio tour transports visitors through the ages from the prehistoric to today. Listening is easy – simply scan the QR code on the bottom of each sign with a smartphone to explore the history at your own pace. Each QR code is linked to a specific section of the tour, allowing for flexible navigation.
