Port Authority of NSW manages the navigation, security and operational safety needs of commercial shipping in New South Wales.
With over 6,000 visits from trade and cruise vessels each year, the ports of New South Wales contribute billions of dollars to our economy, create thousands of jobs and support countless businesses.
We work 24/7 to ensure the safety of these ships, the security of our working ports and the protection of our marine environment.
Across six ports, we deliver safe and efficient marine services, including harbour masters, marine pilotage, aids to navigation, vessel traffic services, emergency response, hydrographic surveying, port management, dangerous goods regulations and cruise terminal operations.
How we work
We manage and operate the ports at Glebe Island, White Bay, Eden and Yamba and have the role of Harbour Master in all NSW ports. Each Harbour Master is appointed under section 85 of the Marine Safety Act 1998 (NSW).
The general function of a Harbour Master is outlined in section 88 of the Marine Safety Act and can be summarised as having ‘powers to direct and control the movement, entry and exit of vessels within port areas’.
We own and manage common user berths at Glebe Island and Sydney Harbour's cruise facilities at the Overseas Passenger Terminal and White Bay Cruise Terminal. We also provide land on long term lease adjacent berths on Glebe Island.
We are the lead agency for responses to maritime incidents in coastal waters stretching from Fingal Head, Port Stephens to Gerroa, Seven Mile Beach, south of Port Kembla.
Port Authority's statutory objectives and functions are derived from the provisions of the State Owned Corporations Act 1989 (NSW), Ports and Maritime Administration Act 1995 (NSW) and the Port Safety Operating Licence issued under section 12(2) of the Ports and Maritime Administration Act 1995.
Our ABN is 50 825 884 846.
